Directions to Pavones:
There are several ways to reach Pavones, Costa Rica.
Many major airlines fly into the International Airports at San
Jose or Liberia. If you choose to rent a car, we recommend
4-wheel drive to all our clients for travel throughout Costa
Rica. If you do not wish to drive, you can continue to Pavones by
getting a flight on the local Costa Rican airline, Sansa, to Golfito.
(To book a flight, contact: flysansa.com.) It is then possible to
catch a taxi or bus to Pavones.
After landing in San Jose, if you choose to drive on the "beach"
road, you can visit the fishing town of Puntarenas, stay at
the Marriott or Condos at Los Suenos, enjoy the populated beach
and tourist shops of Jaco, shop a little at Quepos on
your way to Manual Antonio National Park, and play at the beaches
on the way to Dominical and beyond. But don't stop driving
until you reach the peaceful, beautiful and friendly place called
Pavones.
If taking the mountain route, drive south out of San Jose
on the Pan American Highway by car or bus. The highway takes you to
the volcanic-made mountains rising high above the clouds. You can
enjoy a refreshing meal at the top of the mountain while watching
a mix of colorful hummingbirds at the feeders outside the windows
of the restaurant there.

After San Isidro de El General, the road leads through Buenos
Aires then down the river canyon to Palmar Norte. Continue on to Rio
Claro where you will turn right toward Golfito. Watch for the paved
road on your left, at the Salon El Rodeo (10 km from the Rio Claro
turnoff), at the scratched sign saying "Pavones."

The road begins to get extremely bumpy here, but you only have 30
more miles to go. At the major river, which flows on to Zancudo, there
is a unique ferry to be replaced at some point by the bridge under
construction. Run by a 25 horsepower motor, the ferry takes one to
three vehicles at a time across the river.

Four-wheel-drive is almost a necessity at this point. On the road
again, follow the signs to "Pavones." As your adventure continues,
the views become more and more tantalizing. Every hilltop you reach
yields bigger and better views of the Golfo Dulce, the gulf
between the Osa Peninsula and the mainland.

The closer you drive toward the water, the louder the surf sounds.
At the top of the last hill, look right to see the entire Zancudo
Beach.

At sunset, the rich purple or orange skies brighten the western sky
above the Osa Peninsula and make the gulf waters turn to fire.

At the bottom of the last long hill, you will be at beach level.
Continue straight on the gravel road to Pavones. Once the road actually
reaches the beach, you are nearing Rio Claro, the main pueblo in the
Pavones area. Stay along the beach, past the school and fishing boats
and you will see our office on the left. If driving in the daylight,
wave at the local walkers, and you get a smile and friendly wave in
return. The people here are very friendly.
Pavones Best Rentals is located 30 minutes before you get
to Pavones before Pilon, in the hills of Cuervito. Coming from Comte
towards Pilon, 500 meters past the school, La Escuela de Cuervito,
look for the second white fence on the right. Our office is in a home
in the housing subdivision behind the iron-gated road with painted
concrete-stucco pillars holding the gate.
Once in Pavones, you can finish your drive with a nice meal at any
of the multiple beachfront and river-front cantinas and restaurants
within walking distance. There are three cantinas with local fare,
one vegetarian restaurant, one Mediterranean style restaurant, one
Italian restaurant with GREAT pizza, and two grocery stores in the
center of town if you'd rather pick up sandwich fixings. If you need
help finding accomodations, PAVONES BEST RENTALS has numerous
rentals to choose from: cabinas, lodges and private homes are available.
